A brand-new chapter is coming for one of the most iconic sci-fi anime franchises ever — and this time, it's in the hands of a successful studio Science SARU, now mostly known as creators of Dandadan anime. Bandai Namco Filmworks just dropped a teaser trailer and revealed the main staff behind the upcoming Ghost in the Shell anime series, set to premiere in 2026. Here's everything we know so far.

New Title, A New Generation and Creator's Thoughts

According to the Anime News Network site, the anime is officially titled Kōkaku Kidōtai THE GHOST IN THE SHELL, using both the Japanese and English titles to nod to its roots and wide international appeal. While the Ghost in the Shell franchise has seen many adaptations over the years, this one is shaping up to be something entirely new — both visually and thematically — thanks to a unique creative team.

Original Ghost in the Shell creator Masamune Shirow shared a few words about the new adaptation. He noted that this upcoming anime is the fourth main version of the story — if you’re only counting the major productions from Mamoru Oshii, Kenji Kamiyama, and Kazuchika Kise. But if you separate the various projects (Innocence, Stand Alone Complex, ARISE, SAC_2045), this will actually be the tenth adaptation in total. Shirow admitted that the manga is now pretty old and asked fans to be understanding as the franchise evolves again. Still, he’s hopeful that this new version will be another exciting visual experience for both new and longtime fans.

Remembering Atsuko Tanaka

The announcement comes with a heavy heart, as Atsuko Tanaka, the long-time voice of Major Motoko Kusanagi, sadly passed away in August 2024 at age 61. Her performance helped define the character for generations of anime fans, and her legacy will no doubt live on in the world of Ghost in the Shell.

Conclusion: New Era Should Bring Old Appeal of Ghost in the Shell

Ghost in the Shell has always been more than just an anime. It's a culturally iconic piece of media — a story that keeps evolving with time, technology, and the people behind it. With fresh faces like Moko-chan stepping up and the trusted talents of creators like Toh Enjoe and Shūhei Handa, this new version feels like the beginning of a bold new era for the franchise.

If Science SARU’s past work is anything to go by, we’re in for something wild, emotional, and full of big ideas. Keep your eyes on 2026 — Ghost in the Shell is coming back, and it’s bringing a whole new vision with it.
