Yohji Yamamoto and Comme des Garçons: How Two Designers Made Black the Loudest Color in Tokyo
Yohji Yamamoto and Comme des Garçons made black the loudest color in fashion. How two Japanese designers built avant-garde empires you still see in Shibuya.

In a city full of color, two Japanese designers built global empires out of black. Yohji Yamamoto and Rei Kawakubo's Comme des Garçons didn't just make clothes—they rewrote what fashion could mean, and you can still read their influence on the streets of Shibuya today.

The Paris earthquake of 1981

When Yohji Yamamoto and Comme des Garçons debuted in Paris in 1981, the European press was scandalized. The collections were black, oversized, asymmetric and deliberately "unfinished"—critics called it "Hiroshima chic." What looked like destruction was actually a new grammar: clothing designed around the body's movement rather than its silhouette.

Anti-fashion as philosophy

Both designers rejected the idea that clothes should flatter or seduce in the conventional Western sense. Yohji's draping and Kawakubo's conceptual tailoring treated black not as the absence of color but as the loudest possible statement. Decades later that philosophy is mainstream—every deconstructed hem and intentionally oversized coat owes them a debt.

From the runway to Shibuya

Tokyo's avant-garde street style still runs on these ideas. Layered black, raw edges and architectural volume show up constantly in Shibuya and Urahara snaps, mixed with everything from workwear to vintage. For a current read on how Tokyo wears all-black, browse the street features at ViVi. The lesson Yohji and Kawakubo taught—that restraint can be radical—has never felt more relevant.
