Confronting Fear: The Perils of Dandadan Chapter 186
Dora NaletilićShare
We got another chapter of Dandadan, and it was excellent. Chapter 186, titled 'Kuoki Yukishiro's Power,' presented us with a very uncomfortable reveal of Murakami and Miss Adachi's connection and Aira and Kuoki doing a 'Your Lie in April' style scenario in which the latter girl reveals her powers that could potentially be pivotal.
Murakami's Disgusting Deeds Know No Bounds
In the previous chapter of Dandadan, we saw Aira doing her best to save Class Rep and the latter using her 'idol' powers in the battle against headless beings. Moreover, we learn that Murakami is the man who blackmailed Kuoki and other people into hunting people with yokai powers. In this chapter, we see Aira and Rin trying their hardest to destroy the headless beings and to locate Murakami, whose whereabouts are unknown. Of course, Aira and Rin cannot defeat the beings themselves, which is why pygmies come in. Kuoki begs pygmies to help them locate Murakami, and they immediately go to work.
On the other side of the town, sweaty and visibly insane, Murakami observes happenings in the gym, and after he does his usual workout, he greets another person in his apartment—Miss Adachi, another professor from Kami High. She is dressed quite indecently, and that prompts Murakami to ask her why she is in such a gloomy mood. We learn quite quickly that Miss Adachi has a sick mother for whom she has to take care off but due to lack of extra money, which came from Murakami himself, she had to become his 'sexual partner'. It's very obviously hinted within the manga panel. However, it seems that Miss Adachi decided to put a stop to Murakami's disgusting acts - she is seen holding a special talisman, which Seiko uses to seal yokai. Bad things (hopefully) await Murakami.

Kuoki Faces Her Fears
Back at the gym, pygmies report to Kuoki that Murakami isn't in the gym at all, which prompts Mai to ask Kuoki to use her power. Remember at the beginning of this arc, we learned that Kuoki was a piano prodigy who won every single music tournament, and Aira was one of her biggest rivals. Well, Mai wants Kuoki to play a piano (which was procured by pygmies) to help Rin and for her music to amplify her powers. Kuoki tries to play, but she can't—she had a perfect pitch and gift of recognizing and playing the music, but music teachers limited her by making her play only by written notes.
After being forced to stop 'seeing the sound,' Kuoki stopped playing like a prodigy but like a robot—she lost her feel for music. This is where Aira jumps in with her leadership and fearlessness.
Aira Uses Her Fearless Leadership to Help Kuoki
If you watched 'Your Lie in April,' reading this situation between Aira and Kuoki will definitely remind you of that very emotional series. Aira immediately uses her 'sunny' disposition 'and calls Kuoki on her, well … let's say reluctance and fear. The fearful girl starts listing things that prevent her from playing—different types of a piano, no music notes, etc.
This angers Aira and lets the girl know that she is a prodigy. She was the one who pushed her when she was young, and that listening to her play prevented her from thinking about her mother being gone. Kuoki's music was so pure that it pushed Aira to want to play like her, and after the prodigy quit playing, Aira quit too! This motivation and reminder push Kuoki to start playing her music, which emotionally touches everyone in the gym. However, the music isn't amplifying Rin's powers; it drives the horde of flies that are currently flying around the city, looking for their target—Murakami.
Conclusion: Kuoki's Power Controls Flies
As mentioned while reviewing previous chapters, Tatsu really knows how to create very hated characters without any type of redemption. Murakami is one of the most uncomfortable and disgusting villains in Dandadan, and it's not even close. The way he used people, especially Miss Adachi at her lowest, making her his 'slave' for little extra money, just shows how human desperation can be fickle and strong at the same time.
At the same time, we saw Kuoki revealing her ability and finally overcoming a fear of playing piano. The whole situation between Aira and Kuoki is very 'Your Lie in April'-coded, making the whole scene even more emotional. Once again, it's cool seeing Aira lead and the fact that Kuoki can control literal flies with her music, which will hopefully locate Murakami.
